MORE ENGLISH LINKS

I have just added two english links series to this blog. The first one
displays a list of English Language media published or broadcasted in
Catalonia (or the Catalan Countries if you prefer). As you can see Barcelona
and Costa Blanca are the areas with a higher number of such media. The
second one includes the english version of a few catalan public institutions
websites. Andorra is also incorporated in this second list. Unfortunately
there is no english version for Perpinyà city, nor Eastern Pyrenees General
Council, nor Llenguadoc-Rosselló Region websites.

I think this kind of press deserves to be studied carefully, because once
you read it, you can find astonishing opinions, particularly about Catalan
Nationalism, Catalan Language, and so on. Also some "typical Spanish"
features are predicated as the quintaessential catalan idyosincratic way of
being.

I know that we must not blame those contributor's ignorance only. We must
blame also to our rulers, because they have not implemented worldwide media
campaigns to export our Catalan values, way of life, cultural and linguistic
identity. They would rather prefer to be under Made in Spain umbrella... you
know: flamenco, bullfighting, sun, beautiful black-eyed ladies à la Carmen,
Guardia Civil with tricornio, and all this kitsch shit.

However, I'm certain that average smart people coming from abroad will be
aware in just a matter of hours, may be minutes, that Catalonia, and Catalan
people do not match with all stereotypes about our western neighbours. Those
who fail, deserve to be considered a kind of Borat replicants.

It is well established that English proficiency is one of the most relevant
shortcomings over here. I have a theory about that. I think that, contrary
to other European peoples, not a few number of Catalans believe (or someone
has make them believe) that if they speak Spanish that's enough to travel
around the World. And that's not true.

In fact, from my point of view, the oppressive presence of Spanish Language
in our everyday life, difficults the consolidation of the English
proficiency by catalan students and workforce. It is crystal-clear that
English, not Spanish, is the current lingua franca of globalization. May be
in the following decades it will be replaced by Chinese, but not right now.
So if we want to be competitive, we must be able to speak, read, write, in
sum work, in a standard English or better.

En aquest sentit recordo un treball que va fer fa molts anys en Jordi
Soler Comardons referit al trilingüisme conflictiu (o quelcom semblant, ara
no recordo bé el títol) que venia de explicar no sols la interferència de
l'espanyol en l'ús de l'anglès sino que la introducció de l'anglès, en tant que
llengua franca, substituirà l'espanyol.

Es semblant als meus (també deterministes) plantejaments sistèmics sobre
els espais polítics a Catalunya: si l'espanyol té un paper (fer de llengua
franca internacional amb allò que era l'entorn internacional més habitual
dels catalans) i s'incorpora una llengua que no sols fa el mateix paper sino
que el fa millor, la primera perd en la competència.

Per tant la introducció de l'anglès seria la millor manera d'alliberar-nos
de l'espanyol. El català, en tant que llenga pròpia, no sufriria i tampoc
hauríem de tenir por de substitució perquè l'anglès té estructures molt
diferents que dificulten la dialectització.

Com l'enemic és prou llest, la lògica dialèctica de la tesi implicaria
dificultats dels poders espanyolistes a la introducció de l'anglès, o a la
seva institucionalització, així com propaganda de guerra psicològica (amb
intents de fer-nos combregar als catalans amb les fòbies anti-anglòfones,
moltes d'elles provinents de la guerra de cuba).
